Dharmavaram is the third biggest town in Ananthapuramu district and famous throughout India for silk sarees production. Sri Kriyasakthi Wadiyar, the scion of Mysore state built a village in memory of his mother Dharmamba and named it as Dharmavaram. The town is also renowned for its marvellous temples built in Vijayanagara style. Puttaparthi, the birth place and abode of Sri Sathya Sai Baba is situated 42 kms from this town.
It is in this historic and commercially vibrant town, Government Degree College was started during the academic year 1982-83 offering B.A. (E.H.P.) and B.Com. (General) Courses with a humble beginning. It was rechristened as K. H. Government Degree College as one of the philanthropists of Dharmavaram town, Sri Kasetty Haridasulu donated One Lakh Rupees towards corpus fund. The College which was in the heart of Dharmavaram town for 22 years functioning in the premises of Government High School was shifted to the present location in 2004 to its own campus comprising 10 acres of land donated by Sri Seeripi Anjaneyulu.
K. H. Government Degree College is a co-education college and is affiliated to Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ananthapuramu and all the courses offered by the college have permanent affiliation with the parent university. The college also enjoys 2(f) &12(B) recognition by UGC from 30.11.1991 and 29.07.1992 respectively.
Since its inception, this institution is catering to the needs of rural & downtrodden sections of this town and surrounding villages. In fact, this college is the only source of higher education in government sector to the youth of many villages nearby Dharmavaram.
Subsequently, B.A (H.P.S.) and B.Sc. (M.P.C.) courses were introduced to meet the growing needs of the students. Later on, keeping in view of demand for computers course, B.Com., (Computers) was introduced under restructured courses. Since then, the college has produced a number responsible personalities in all walks of life. The students of this college have special reputation in Hockey and Chess. Our students have been winning and securing good places in All India Inter-University Hockey and Chess Tournaments. Indeed, the college is a rare gift to not only to the students of Dharmavaram but also to the students of nearby villages of Dharmavaram town.
There are ten Teaching and four Non-Teaching Staff on rolls at present. Fifty per cent of its teachers are doctoral scrolls and the remaining are qualified in the NET/SLET. The staff is committed and hardworking. The institution has established cordial relations with the community who are always willing to extend their helping hand for the development of the college. The faculty interacts with the students in a friendly and empathetic manner. It is the avowed mission of the institution to produce useful and well-meaning graduates with a secular and democratic out-look.
However, the college which used to attract students in large numbers gradually is losing its sheen of late. The mushrooming of a number of private colleges in the heart of town, with dubious offers in recent times is posing grave challenge to the institution resulting in the drastic fall of student enrolment. The institution under the guidance and assistance from higher authorities is trying to strengthen its resources, both human and technical, to overcome this challenge.
The process of preparation of this report has been an exercise of self-evaluation and has helped us to gain an insight into the potentialities of the institution. It will help the institution in equipping itself with the required professionalism both academically and administratively, ultimately leading to the enhancement of quality of education.
The institution wishes to express its profound gratitude to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada, whose constant guidance and support led to the completion of the report. We feel highly obliged to National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bengaluru for giving us this opportunity to asses ourselves in the first place and submit the Report for accreditation. We hope that this process of assessment and accreditation would certainly contribute to accelerate the development of the institution
